The George MacDonald letter


I first started playing Champions back in 1981, using the First Edition rules. It quickly became my favorite RPG system in my favorite genre. By 1983, as a precocious innocent lad of 18, the Second Edition had come out, and Champions II had followed shortly on its heels. I still remember seeing my friend Todd's copy of the first printing of Champions II, which had vastly different vehicle rules than my own copy. I was so into what would later be called the Hero System that I started thinking up Powers that weren't represented in the existing rules set.

I wrote up a list of my ideas and sent it off to Hero Games. This list included powers like:

Some of these powers were . . . less inspired than others.

But apparently, this came to the attention of none other than George MacDonald, the man who'd come up with the idea for the Champions system in the first place!

Here is the letter I received, which he typed up, printed on a dot matrix printer, and mailed off to me from San Mateo in February of 1984:
